The Green Bag Lady

January 7th, 2010 § 6 comments

I “met” Teresa Van Hatten-Granath, a.k.a. The Green Bag Lady, when when she ordered some Divine Twine for herself to be from her husband as a Christmas present (did you follow that?).

“Paper or Plastic? Fabric!” is her slogan and her Green Bag Lady Project is amazing! She and her team of “Bagettes” make shopping totes and give them away for FREE at Green Bag Lady Events to encourage using fewer paper and plastic bags.  She also frequently gives away bags on her blog.

I was so moved and delighted when I read her story I immediately went through my fabric stash and shipped some fabric to her. I even sent her a cute polka dot shower curtain I never got around to using. (Perhaps you have some extra fabric that could venture out into the world and do some good? Why not send it Teresa’s way? Email her at teresa (at) to find out where to send it.)

She and her team have given away over 8,000 bags so far (each bag is numbered and tagged)! Teresa was so sweet and sent me my very own Green Bag Lady bag.  I now carry it folded in my purse so it’s “at the ready” when I’m out doing errands.

A partial list of the name and bag # of each person who has received a bag.
Stories and photos of bags and their owners.
A scary, yet motivating, counter showing plastic bags consumed this year.
